Coastal New England is rich in maritime history. The beautiful rocky coastline, quaint towns and fresh seafood make every charter a classic experience. The charming communities of Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Boston offer nautical landmarks, timeless architecture and picturesque harbors.
Newport 7-day itinerary
Day 1 Steam from Newport, Rhode Island to Block Island which is idyllic with just one small beach town, and miles of hiking trails with cliff-top views.
Day 2 Leave Block Island for the island of Nantucket. Biking is a great way to appreciate the island’s fields and weathered shingled buildings. For a very good evening meal, try the club car or the Wawinet House in the little village of Siasconset. Be sure to call ahead to reserve your table. While you are out there, see the red and white striped Sankaty Lighthouse and the huge sand dune cliffs.
Day 3 Leave Nantucket for Martha’s Vineyard which is blessed with scenic beauty and charm. Shopping is great here and a tour of the island is always interesting. The most visited spot seems to be the brightly colored cliffs at Gay Head. Also ride the ferry ‘Chappy’ to the infamous Chappaquiddik island.
Day 4 Steam from Martha’s Vineyard to Hyannis (approximately 30nm; 2 to 3 hours cruising), one of the Cape’s earliest summer resorts. The harbor is full of yachts and sightseeing boats.
Day 5 Spend the day swimming in the Elizabeth Islands (approximately 15nm from Hyannis, yet additional cruising in the islands would increase the daily distance), then go to either Hadley’s Harbor or Cuttyhunk for the night. This area is largely uninhabited yet gorgeous.
Day 6 Leave Cuttyhunk or Hadley’s Harbor for Newport (approximately 2 to 3 hours cruising).
